Next steps outlined for McNair Campus development

The ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine Board of Trustees Wednesday gave approval for the further development of the McNair Campus.

"We will be working on philanthropic efforts and seeking necessary approvals towards a goal of moving the first outpatient clinics into the new ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine Specialty Care Center in the summer of 2013," said Dr. Paul Klotman, BCM president and CEO. "The McNair Campus will be an important site for all of our missions in the future."

The McNair Campus includes the recently designated Lee and Joe Jamail Specialty Care Center, which is fully occupied with six adult practices, and the unfinished project, which is completed on the exterior but has not been built out in the interior.

The plan is for space in the unfinished facility to be developed as the BCM Specialty Care Center, with the goal of having most of BCM's clinical practices that are currently in leased space moved to that building in the next few years. Philanthropy will support the majority of the development of the McNair Campus.

The College's research and education missions eventually will be added to the McNair Campus.

"We are fortunate that the facility was designed to be flexible in its build-out to meet the needs of the community," said Klotman. "At this time, Houston does not need any more traditional hospital beds. We will continue to evaluate the situation in the future as needs of the community change. With this adaptable approach, we are well prepared for whatever changes result from health care reform."

Klotman said the most important aspect of BCM's clinical program is the quality of care provided to patients. He said leadership teams are working to enhance the experience for patients.

"Our McNair Campus is beautiful. Our buildings are superb. But what will set us apart as we move forward is the way we treat our patients. That is our highest priority – the thing that matters most in whether we are successful in our clinical mission," he said. "Our goal is to provide exceptional care at the best value for our patients in a system that makes sense to patients – from the time they call for an appointment until their care is completed. This is what ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine will be known for – putting patients first."
