Section Highlights
- The Section of Cardiology expanded fellowship training through a new four-week block curriculum, early skills rotations in echocardiography and catheterization, and nationally recognized educational programs, including the Texas Heart Institute Cardiac Society Symposium and Ali Massumi Cardiac Arrhythmia Symposium.
- Faculty earned national recognition for excellence in research, education, and leadership, including the ACC Distinguished Fellow Award, national society leadership appointments, editorial board positions, and major honors from the and ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine.
- The section secured significant research funding, including renewal of the and a five-year NIH R01 grant to Dr. Mihail Chelu, while advancing landmark clinical trials and first-in-human studies in heart failure, electrophysiology, pulmonary hypertension, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.
- At Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, faculty performed a first-in-human implantation of the BiVACOR Total Artificial Heart and expanded electrophysiology capabilities with two new pulsed-field ablation technologies.
- Ben Taub Hospital expanded advanced cardiovascular services by opening three new catheterization laboratories and an electrophysiology lab, launching a cardiogenic shock program, adding Impella, ECMO, and EC-Pella support therapies, and earning national recognition through the NCDR Platinum Performance Achievement Award and multiple AHA Mission: Lifeline Awards.
- The Michael E. DeBakey VA Medical Center continued to pioneer cardiovascular innovation, implementing ECHO NAV and Amulet left atrial appendage occlusion, performing the VA’s first use of drug-coated balloons, expanding cardiac contractility modulation therapies, and becoming one of the first centers nationally to use pulsed-field ablation for atrial fibrillation.
