Professional Interests

  • My interests broadly focus on the early emergence of ASD symptomatology, as well as how parent perceptions about ASD influence their health-related behaviors.

Professional Statement

As a full-time research psychologist, my expertise is in the phenotypic characterization and diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). I am one of three across all BCM faculty who has achieved the highest status for reliable administration of the Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS) and the Autism Diagnostic Interview鈥擱evised (ADI-R), considered 鈥済old-standard鈥 instruments for aiding a diagnosis of ASD. This sought-after skill set lends to an increasing number of both local and national requests for my collaboration on new research proposals, education of other providers and trainees on use of these tools, and presentations about ASD. Since 2003, my research has primarily focused on characterization of individuals with ASD and related genetic conditions, including management of three large, network-affiliated studies supported by the prestigious Simons Foundation. My involvement in these network efforts have helped me launch specific programs of research on causes and consequences of developmental regression in ASD, how parent perceptions about ASD influence their health-related behaviors, and emergent vaccine hesitancy resulting from fears about ASD.

Videos

Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their families are invited to enroll in SPARK, the largest online, genetic database of those affected by ASD.
