Professional Statement
Dr. Robert Ellis Southard earned his medical degree from the University of South Alabama. He completed training as a general surgeon at ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ of Medicine before completing additional training at Washington University in St. Louis in surgical critical care. Dr. Southard continued to work at Washington University in the fields of general surgery, trauma surgery and surgical critical care until moving back to Houston to join the Division of General Surgery in the Michael E. DeBakey Department of Surgery at ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ of Medicine. His research interests involve determining why critically ill and injured patients develop hospital-acquired infections. Dr, Southard also has a strong interest in resident and medical student education.
