Professional Statement

Ramiro Fernandez, MD, is a general thoracic surgeon whose practice encompasses all areas of general thoracic surgery and lung transplantation. This includes a specific interest in the management of benign and malignant thoracic disorders using minimally invasive surgical techniques such as VATS and the Robotic platform. A major component of his practice is the multidisciplinary management of advanced lung disease including Lung Volume Reduction Surgery (LVRS) and lung transplantation. His research focus is on the mechanisms of lung ischemia reperfusion injury and early lung allograft dysfunction. He has a particular interest in leveraging novel technologies such as ex-vivo lung perfusion to go beyond organ preservation and evaluation into the treatment and modification of lung allografts.

Dr. Fernandez received his medical degree from ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine followed by a general surgery residency at Northwestern University where he also completed a research fellowship in lung transplant immunology. He then completed a thoracic surgery fellowship at Cleveland Clinic. As an academic thoracic surgeon, Dr. Fernandez's goals are to provide quality patient-centered care and to innovate in the thoracic space while advancing the care of his patients.
