Professional Statement
My background is in theoretical physics, especially applied problems in non-equilibrium physics. This is very effective training for the sort of signal processing problems at low signal-to-noise ratio, which I have worked on at the Texas Medical Center for the last 15 years. I split my time between two labs. At the MRI center, I have teamed up to work out a novel approach for identifying and studying the behavior of small structures, such as the habenula, in fMRI. In the cryo-electron microscopy lab, I am one of the codevelopers of EMAN/EMAN2 which has become the most popular software package for cryo-EM. The combined training in applied mathematical problems, and functional imaging makes me a unique candidate to undertake the current proposal on the effects of anesthesiology on the developing brain.
