Professional Statement

My goals as a scientist and educator are to strengthen the quality of science and health teaching at all educational levels; develop innovative and effective approaches to teach science and health more effectively to students of all ages; build general scientific literacy; and promote access to careers in science, medicine and the health professions.

I lead programs that accomplish these goals through interdisciplinary approaches to science teaching and learning, local and national partnerships to promote systemic change in STEM teaching and learning, and application of web-based technologies for educator support and professional development. This work has been supported by grant awards from various centers and institutes of the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, National Space Biomedical Research Institute and Howard Hughes Medical Institute, among others.

Most of my career at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine has been in the Center for Educational Outreach. Until recently, I also served as Associate Provost of Faculty Development and Institutional Research, where I expanded my focus to encompass faculty development at the graduate and professional levels. Currently, as Chair of Baylor’s new Huffington Department of Education, Innovation & Technology, I have the opportunity to work with talented colleagues who represent a range of primary disciplines and expertise to develop the academic home of education at the College.
