Professional Statement
I am highly organized and self-driven, passionate about taking care of patients on the macro level of the healthcare system and developing my career in healthcare epidemiology. My leadership commitment can be gauged by the fact that I hold an MBA from the University of Arizona and a Certificate in Safety, Quality, Informatics, and Leadership from Harvard Medical School. In my current position as the chief of the infectious diseases section at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center (BSLMC) and the Medical Director of Infection Prevention and Antimicrobial Stewardship for BSLMC and CommonSpirit Health (CSH) TX division (17 hospitals), I am accountable for leading a team of 15 physicians and over 50 infection preventionists and infectious disease pharmacists and carrying out a wide range of responsibilities to improve hospital-acquired infection rates. I am a skillful communicator with excellent organizational, decision making and time-management skills. I have authored over 70 publications in peer-reviewed journals or book chapters, mostly related to healthcare epidemiology and antimicrobial stewardship. My accomplishments in this position include a marked reduction of Clostridioides difficile infections (53%) by using a new bundle with an estimated savings of $775,000 annually.
My passion is educating medical students, residents, fellows, and other faculty members. I have developed a one-year track for second and third-year infectious disease fellows in infection prevention, antibiotic stewardship, quality improvement, and leadership. In my role in the Department of Medicine Vice Chair Group for Quality Improvement and Innovations, I have developed a quality academy to train all the Department of Medicine fellows. On a national level, I served on the Finance Committee of the IDSA and the SHEA Public Policy and Government Affairs Committee. I currently serve on SHEA public policy and government affairs (PPGA) and guidelines committees, the IDSA QI committee, and the board of directors of the Certification Board of Infection Control and Epidemiology (CBIC), which certifies infection preventionists worldwide. I was recently selected as a Fellow of IDSA, SHEA, APIC, and ACHE and was elected as the president of the Houston Infectious Disease Society and the treasurer for CBIC.
