Dr. Lopez and her team design, implement and evaluation innovative strategies, programs, policies and practices to mitigate childhood adversities and to promote resilience in children, families and communities. Dr. Lopez’s current research initiatives include a maternal support intervention for new mothers, and a parental support program for mothers living with HIV.

As the Associate Director of Community Engagement, Dr. Lopez supports k-12, undergraduate, graduate and post baccalaureate students seeking to enhance their preparedness for subsequent training in the health professions and biomedical sciences. Dr. Lopez' role is to lead and influence the implementation of initiatives of growth and maintenance of a culture of inclusion and ensure these initiatives support BCM's mission and values. Dr. Lopez works to build trust-based relationships with community stakeholders to ensure outreach initiatives align with institutional goals.

Professional Statement

Dr. Lopez's research interests include designing interventions to mitigate the effects health inequities and non-medical drivers of health. Her areas of expertise include epidemiology of infectious diseases, maternal child health, sexual health, injury prevention, and qualitative research methods. Dr. Lopez works with communities and vulnerable populations to identify health issues of concern and to develop solutions from within the community. She has more than thirty years of experience engaging community and vulnerable populations in research and advocacy.

Dr. Lopez earned a bachelor's degree in Anthropology from the University of Houston, a Masters in Public Health in Community Health Practice and a Doctorate in Public Health in Management, Policy and Community Health from The University of Texas School of Public Health-Houston. At ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ of Medicine, Dr. Lopez is the Associate Director for Community Engagement and Health Equity. Dr. Lopez is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Division of Public Health Pediatrics at ÌÇÐÄÊÓÆµ of Medicine and serves as the Director of Public Health Practice. Dr. Lopez is the Director of Inclusive Excellence at the Behavioral Plasticity Research Institute. She holds a faculty appointment at the University of Texas School of Public Health-Department of Management, Policy, and Community Health, and is a Faculty Affiliate with the Kinder Institute for Urban Research at Rice University.

Dr. Lopez serves as Chair of the Harris County Child Fatality Review Team, Harris County Domestic Violence Death Review Team, the Houston Independent School District School Health Advisory Committee, the Texas State Fetal Infant Morbidity Review on HIV and Congenital Syphilis Case Review/Community Action Team, and as Co-Chair of the University of Texas School of Public Health Practice Council. Dr. Lopez is a previous AcademyHealth Disparities Fellow and a CityMatch City Leader.
