Professional Interests

  • Steroid receptor and coregulator control of normal and abnormal functions of the uterus and mammary gland.

Professional Statement

Our research group is interested in understanding the cellular and molecular signaling mechanisms by which steroid hormone receptors and their coregulators control the biology and pathobiology of the female reproductive tract and mammary gland. One of our research projects is focused on delineating the role of progesterone receptor mediated signaling in the development of uterine receptivity, an endometrial transient state that is necessary for embryo implantation and pregnancy establishment. Another research focus is to elucidate the involvement of progesterone signaling in postnatal mammary gland development and tumorigenesis, currently a controversial and poorly understood area of breast cancer investigation. Our final—and more recent—research focus is to determine the molecular underpinnings that initiate and promote salivary gland malignancies, an understudied but lethal subset of head and neck cancers. Along with the use of state-of-the-art engineered mouse models, inventive cellular and molecular investigative approaches, and genome-wide analytics, we routinely collaborate with our clinical colleagues to translate our findings from both cell culture and mouse studies to the human. Because of the research questions being addressed in our laboratory, results from our studies have the potential to significantly advance our clinical understanding of female infertility as well as the etiopathogenesis of select exocrine tissue cancers, such as those of the mammary and salivary gland.
