- The goal is to establish a large longitudinal case-control cohort Veterans to comprehensively evaluate for the late effects of combat related mTBI, describe the late outcomes and change over time of Veterans with single and repeated mTBI, and establish whether, and to what extent, mTBI(s) is associated with poorer outcome among combat-exposed Veterans.

Conversion of Clinical Data from the National Acute Brain Injury Trials: Hypothermia I & II into FITBIR

- The goal of this project is to prepare a related group of legacy data sets for addition to the Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research Informatics System (FITBIR). Data sets from the National Acute Brain Injury Study: Hypothermia (NABISH) projects will be reviewed, analyzed, and mapped to existing FITBIR data structures; selected variables that do not map to existing International Common Data Elements (CDE), as incorporated into FITBIR, will be identified, described, and formatted for inclusion as Unique Data Elements (UDE) per FITBIR procedures.

Imaging Common Data Elements as Predictors of Long-Term Outcome in Pediatric TBI

- The major goal of this project involves collection and analysis of acute clinical imaging from an existing multi-center study of pediatric TBI (for study entitled 鈥淓ffect of Treatment on Outcome after TBI in Children and Adolescents鈥 funded by the CDC as indicated below). The imaging data from all project sites in the parent study will undergo centralized analysis by a pediatric neuroradiologist to derive Federal Interagency Traumatic Brain Injury Research (FITBIR)-compatible, comprehensive neuroimaging CDEs for TBI.

Using Individual DTI Profiles of Mild TBI to Guide Targeted, Non-Invasive Brain Stimulation Intervention for Veterans with Persistent Post-Concussion Symptoms.

- Our main objective is to use, for the first time, a novel reference brain atlas to create subject-specific profiles of brain injury to guide targeted transcranial direct conduction stimulation (tDCS) to treat individual brain regions of injury for each Veteran suffering from mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) with persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS).

Diffusion Tensor Imaging Standardization using Novel MR Diffusion Phantoms

- In this proposal, we will use diffusion imaging phantoms to evaluate differences between scanners with the goal of providing acquisition techniques that will data to be compared across different patient groups and combined into large data collections. Our objective is to provide a means for the many different scanners across the VA hospital system.

- The major goals of this project are to investigate the effects of mild traumatic brain injury through a converging fMRI study of attention networks wherein we would integrate DTI measurement of injury to tracts with analysis of fMRI data. In addition, we propose the evaluation of TBI effects on resting state connectivity of the default mode network (DMN), a network which has been implicated in attention and exhibits changes with both mTBI and PTSD.
