Derek Erstad, M.D., is a surgical oncologist and an assistant professor of surgery at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine and the Michael E. Debakey VA Medical Center. His surgical practice includes general surgical oncologic conditions with an emphasis on gastrointestinal malignancies including the liver, bile ducts and gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, small intestine, and colon.
He is actively involved in research focused on gastrointestinal malignancies including the liver and pancreas. His research activities include scientific efforts to better understand the molecular and genetic mechanisms of cancer formation and treatment resistance, as well as clinical research designed to improve surgical treatments for cancer.
Dr. Erstad obtained his bachelor’s in chemistry from the College of Idaho where he was valedictorian. He then received his medical degree from Harvard Medical School and completed his general surgery training at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. He completed subspecialty training in complex general surgical oncology at The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.
Dr. Erstad has received multiple teaching awards from ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine, Harvard Medical School, and Massachusetts General Hospital, and he serves as an ad hoc reviewer for multiple cancer specific surgical and scientific journals.
