Professional Interests

  • Mechanisms of reactive stroma in cancer progression.

Professional Statement

Dr. Rowley is a leader in the field of stromal-epithelial interactions and the genesis of reactive stroma in the tumor microenvironment. His laboratory was the first to identify and characterize reactive stroma myofibroblasts as a key component of the microenvironment in prostate cancer and benign hyperplasia (BPH). He has focused on prostate cancer research for over 30 years. His laboratory has focused on the evolution of microenvironment stroma from stem cells and how this affects disease progression using several novel model systems that address the origins of CAFs / myofibroblasts and their biology. Dr. Rowley has been involved in many individual investigator grant projects and has lead both U54 and U01 Tumor Microenvironment Network (TMEN) NCI funded group projects. In addition, Dr. Rowley has many years of experience as an educator and mentor to graduate students and medical students at the bench and in the classroom.
