Professional Statement
Dr. Aladdein Mattar is a cardiothoracic and transplant surgeon who specializes in thoracic organ recovery for heart and lung transplantation. He has special interest in advanced heart and lung failure and circulatory support.
Dr. Mattar received his thoracic surgery training under Dr. David J. Sugarbaker at the Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Harvard Medical School in Boston, MA. Subsequently, Dr. Mattar joined the cardiothoracic team at University of Michigan as a clinical instructor where his focus was teaching medical students and thoracic organ recovery. Additionally, Dr. Mattar helped with the Perfusix Toronto EVLP trial; a clinical trial studying lungs treated with the Toronto EVLP SystemTM.
Dr. Mattar’s research interest in methods to expand thoracic organ utilization includes the use of the portable normothermic Organ Care Unite for hearts and lungs. Dr. Mattar worked closely with Dr. Loor, the Surgical Director of the Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center Lung Transplantation Program in the Expand Trial II which looked into the use of portable normothermic Ex Vivo Lung Perfusion (EVLP) for transportation and evaluation of extended criteria donor lungs using the Organ Care System (OCS).
Dr. Mattar is co-investigator in a research study with Dr. Liao, the chief of the Division of Cardiothoracic Transplantation and Circulatory Support at ÌÇÐÄÊÓƵ of Medicine. The study is looking into increasing heart transplantation by using hearts from donors after circulatory death (DCD) and will set the benchmark for the criteria of DCD hearts for the future of heart transplantation.
