The Office of Surgical Research (OSR) is committed to providing invaluable support to our principal investigators (PIs). We assist faculty members in the Department of Surgery with research administration, clinical trial conduct, regulatory support, lab seminars, events and more.

Research Administration  

From grant submissions, renewals and closeouts to budget development, award setup and sub-award establishment, we are committed to ensuring accurate and timely documentation. Our team also monitors awards and salary distributions, processes invoices and payments and maintains open accounts while ensuring compliance with Responsible Conduct of Research and Research Conflicts of Interest regulations. We liaise with the Sponsored Programs Office, the Office of Clinical Research and Sponsored Projects Finance to facilitate smooth and efficient research administration.

Research Support 

We have dedicated team members to assist our PIs with the administrative and logistical aspects of research activities. We coordinate research faculty and staff position requests, assist with bringing in research guests, monitor visas and onboard new research staff. Our team also manages the transition of new faculty and organizes seminars and events. Additionally, we provide crucial support for statistical analysis and editorial needs for grant applications, clinical trials and Data Safety Monitoring Boards, as well as drafting manuscripts and abstracts.  

Our team members are formally trained in research with post-graduate degrees, enabling them to provide relevant and effective support in research development, internal reviews, proposal submission and scientific communication. The OSR team is dedicated and proficient in ensuring that all research activities are conducted smoothly and efficiently. 

OSR also provides editing and review services prior to grant submission.  Our team is staffed by post-doctoral grant reviewers who assist in engaging and leading faculty panels to review proposals.  These reviews provide opportunities to engage additional collaborators and provide valuable feedback to enhance proposal development and secure funding for our investigators.

Clinical Research

OSR provides our investigators assistance with feasibility analysis, budget development, protocol development and creating regulatory documents for Institutional Review Board (IRB) submissions. Our clinical research coordinators are trained to conduct research activities in compliance with ICH-GCP standards and requirements set by the DHHS and the FDA.  Additionally, our team monitors compliance with human subjects training, onboarding and training clinical research staff and managing the screening, enrollment and follow-up of patients. Our Clinical Research team is also responsible for managing site initiation visits, conducting monitoring visits and audits, and liaising with the IRB to ensure all regulatory requirements are met.  

Baylor currently has four potential sites for clinical studies: the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center, Ben Taub Hospital, Texas Children’s Hospital and Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Our coordinators are credentialed to enroll subjects at all these sites.

Basic and Translational Research  

OSR oversees various aspects of laboratory operations. We monitor dry and wet lab spaces across multiple locations, including ABBR, Jewish, Cooley and McNair buildings, ensuring they are well-maintained and functional. Our team keeps track of capital equipment, ensures compliance with chemical safety policies, and monitors adherence to Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee protocols to maintain ethical standards in research involving animals. We also coordinate lab seminars and social events, fostering a collaborative and engaging research environment. Additionally, we develop monthly lab newsletters to keep all members informed about the latest developments and updates within the lab.
